His love of the outdoors has taken him from one heaven to another.

Steven found true happiness in simplicity. In the year before his death he wrote a paper at Dixie College paralleling his existence to the life to the statement of Thoreau's "For a man is rich in proportion to the number of things which he can afford to let alone." Exploring the outdoors and climbing is a way in which he found the richness in his own life. It brought him confidence, purpose and a joy that most spend an entire lifetime searching for.
Steven was above all a kind person, unassuming in his presence. Yet, the feeling he brought into a room, with that smile with a sparkle as he would walk up and drop an arm around your shoulder is tangibly and sorely missed.

In 6th Grade, I slept over at his house every other Friday it would seem. I won a map of the world, in some drawing. Steve and I would stare at the map and talk about when we grew up, and how we were going to blow up Russia and East Germany. Then of course the following morning watch music videos pretending that we would become rock stars and go out with the prettiest girls at Grandview (in our 6th grade eyes they would be Teresa Adams, Tracy Brown and Allison Hall). Our tastes in girls seemed to constantly change.
ReplyDeleteI was very surprised when he didn't go out for football. He may have been a little guy, but he had an arm like no other.
So sad that he is no longer with us.
